Lovin' The Fatkini Movement!

(I typed copyright free images in Google and these came up but you should know I do not own the pictures above and below as these belong to their owners etc.)

Wow!  You go girlz!  Yes, that's right!  Fat girls and guys love water too!  And my sister said something to me the other day.  She's lost a lot of weight but is still a little plump according to whoever measures such things.  I think she looks amazing but she is planning a holiday to Dubai in a month or two and had been stressing about the swimsuit situation.  In a conversation with her the other day I asked if she was still excited about her trip and she said she was.  Especially the part where she was going swimming.  Intrigued at the sudden u turn I asked why she wasn't 'afraid' any more and she told me about the fatkini movement she's seen online!  The what?! I asked.  Well I did some research and it's an incredible plus size movement where fat girls are embracing bikinis and wearing them proudly.  They are specifically designed to try and flatter the bigger person as much as possible and I would say this is a success as you need only look at the faces of the women in the pictures online to feel the confidence they are feeling when rocking thier bikinis!  It's super awesome.  And you know what silent judgemental slim world audience there are actually some of us larger people who love to swim and spend time at the beach too.  There should be a sign at gyms, leisure centres and beaches/ resorts which says "NOT JUST FOR POSERS!".  Lol.  And you know that when swimming the lightest clothing is always best for movement within the water for slim people well it's just as necessary for bigger people.  But for years we have covered up.  The one piece which is fine being the swimming item for the plus size.  No-one could imagine fat girls who want to wear bikini's.  How could they stand the shame of showing their bodies that way?  Ignorant masses! Open your minds.  And many would rather see them cover up from top to bottom like some swimwear available out there.  You see the religious swimwear out there I ask you, who can swim freely with all that gear?!  Seriously.  I mean I respect the reason I honestly do but it's just that much harder when in all that get up and takes the fun of gliding through the water freely.  Just wearing a t shirt over your swimming costume as I used to do drags you down. You feel heavier.  In fact if you are not a confident swimmer this can be downright dangerous in natural waters like the ocean!  What am I trying to get at?  Just that it's great to see that the confidence of plus size women in themselves is growing to the point where they will wear what makes them comfortable vs what makes the world uncomfortable.  It takes a certain amount of hutzpah to strut yourself in a bikini anyway and these larger lasses are doing just that!  It started with the bare your arms movement.  Whoa that was a revolution.  The amount of times I have endured extreme weather in a sleeved shirt because I couldn't face showing my 'boeing' wings!  The liberating release of illogical rules of dress for the larger person days are almost over!

This summer has seen another revolution with the fatkini movement.  Women all over the world, albeit still largely in America, are shedding their shackles and saying this is me!  A society which silently and sometimes not so silently imposes a deep routed dress code for those who they deem visually unappealing is victorian and barbaric!   I still feel all women should dress with a little modesty though don't get me wrong.  I mean after all it's just as disturbing to see a beautiful perfect bodied individual showing too much skin via a thin band of a mini skirt so it's a fine balance for the larger woman too.  It's got to be tasteful people.  Just saying. But however we decide to dress.  Whether it be the largest of kaftans or hijab like dresses or the bikini we are always going to be criticised.  Why I am for the fatkini movement is because we are not doing more than a smaller person would do.  I think perhaps personally I reach my limit at and couldn't take a thong brief on a fatkini.  I can't take it on a smaller person so I'm not being biaised.  It's just a little past my sense of decency and sends the wrong message.  But from what I've seen of women advocating the fatkini movement online so far is that they are confident curvy or chubby women being themselves and being happy.  They're beautiful and living their lives.  So I say again you go girlz!  Because I am far behind you in that area and goodness knows if I will ever catch up to you.  I cannot even go to the local pool to swim for exercise in my one piece for fear that I will meet with ridicule because as is so often the case it feels the ignorant and stupid who laugh at big people hang out and gather collectively in gyms and leisure centres!

Lastly while I am still in summer mode and talking of things all kini's, swimming etc. do check out one of my favourite plus size designer's swimsuit summer 2014 range, Monif C in the US.  She is but the queen designer of plus size swimwear and if you are thinking of joining the fatkini movement then you're sure to find what you're looking for there.  In the UK, online stores, Marisota, SimplyBe, Yours, Fashion World, high street store Evans etc will stock something too.
